It's been clear for a long time that there is almost NO foul or reprehensible act that Bush and Cheney could commit that won't have its ardent defenders and apologists . Their defense of Bush now has become immediately clear: 1) Libby committed no crime of consequence 2) It is within the president's powers to commute. 3) The sentence WAS as Bush claims "excess Point One: Libby was found guilty of perjury and obstruction of justice in a probe to ascertain who committed the treasonous act of outing a CIA agent--(she WAS covert and WAS head of a division that was monitoring the movement of WMD--so, please don't bother to go there!) Point Two: Yes, it IS within the president's power to commute, but the way he went about it was unprecedented in its impulsiveness and arbitrariness-- After paying his usual BS lip service to how much he respects the jury's decision, he totally disses the whole judicial process by not even stooping to consult with DOJ and going through the procedures and stipulations obtaining to his commutation . So what else is new, as Bush sees himself as not being subject to the legal restraints of ordinary mortals who don't have God on Speed Dial. Point Three: Legal Scholar Bush decided the punishment was excessive--and oh, the suffering of Libby's poor family!!-(never mind, what happened to the Wilson-Plame family). Sorry Curious George, but the 30-month sentence was the minimum one PRESCRIBED BY LAW for the offense Libby was found guilty of. Fear not--Bush will fall just like Saddam's statue and those 26% or so who cling desperately to Bush's world of delusion will either awaken or be brushed off the shelves of history like so much dust. Peace and Justice.
